Part of Speech Is Part of Me

Today I found an interesting Threads post about learning English. I am not an expert, and honestly, I am still trying to learn English again from the very beginning. But maybe that is okay. So, here we go.

After reading the post, I searched about parts of speech. Then I realized something interesting — this was actually a concept I had known for a long time, but I never understood that the theory behind it is called parts of speech.

A part of speech is the role a word plays in a sentence.
It helps us understand how a word functions in English grammar.

Think of it like this:

  • some words are names,
  • some show actions,
  • some describe things,
  • some connect ideas, etc.

Main Parts of Speech in English

1. Noun

A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples:

  • teacher
  • blog
  • English
  • happiness

Sentence:

My blog helps me organize my thoughts.

2. Verb

A verb shows an action or state.

Examples:

  • write
  • study
  • improve
  • feel

Sentence:

I write every midnight.

3. Adjective

An adjective describes a noun.

Examples:

  • difficult
  • academic
  • tired
  • funny

Sentence:

Learning English is sometimes difficult.

4. Adverb

An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Often ends with -ly.

Examples:

  • slowly
  • carefully
  • naturally

Sentence:

I slowly improve my vocabulary.

5. Pronoun

A pronoun replaces a noun.

Examples:

  • I
  • you
  • he
  • they
  • it

Sentence:

They enjoy reading blogs.

6. Preposition

Shows position, direction, or relationship.

Examples:

  • in
  • on
  • at
  • with
  • about

Sentence:

I write about my experiences.

7. Conjunction

Connects words or sentences.

Examples:

  • and
  • but
  • because
  • although

Sentence:

I want to improve my English, but I struggle to focus.

8. Interjection

Shows emotion or reaction.

Examples:

  • wow!
  • oh!
  • ah!
  • hey!

Sentence:

Wow! Your writing improved a lot.

Here is a simple way to remember:

Part of Speech Function
Noun name
Verb action
Adjective describes noun
Adverb describes action
Pronoun replaces noun
Preposition shows relation
Conjunction connects
Interjection emotion

Example analysis:

“My tired mind writes slowly at midnight.”

Learning parts of speech is very useful because it helps you:

  • build sentences correctly,
  • understand grammar faster,
  • improve IELTS writing,
  • and write more naturally in blogs.

Sooooo....

I think this is an important foundation for restarting my English-learning journey. At my age, studying seriously again sometimes feels difficult. In fact, I never truly learned English seriously, even in senior high school. Before preparing for university applications, I wanted to start sharing my learning process because I believe that when we share something, we not only remember it better, but also understand it more deeply.
